Is Your Database Slow? PCS Offers Progress Performance Tuning to Clients
PCS is offering a new service to clients called Progress Performance Tuning. The PCS database administrators have worked with Progress Software and Bravepoint, a Progress consulting company, to create a list of tuning services for the Progress database. The result of the service is very clear; increased performance of the database, faster queries and reports, reduced time for screens to refresh and an overall increase in system throughput. This service can be performed for clients on an as-needed basis or periodically scheduled such as annually or semiannually.
Reduce the time incurred in the billing application for bill calc, reports and other processes, while improving the overall performance of its billing database. This tuning service has improved performance tremendously at Webster Electric from Marshfield, MO. Webster Electric staff have commented what previously took bill calc 60–70 minutes, is now taking 15–25 minutes. Bobbi Ragsdale, Office Manager at Webster Electric said “The dump and load did work extremely well. Cathy, our billing clerk, was raving about the response time on the bill calc. Vicki, our collections clerk, raved about the disconnect report. This report usually took 45 minutes up to 2 hours, but now ran in 10-15 minutes. Overall, performance of our system has shown a big improvement. This service is extremely valuable and I would recommend any utility to have it done”.
The primary functions of the tuning service include
• Dump and load (a Progress process to organize information within the database)
• Implement high performance storage areas
• Analyze and divide database areas into logical and efficient segments
• Move BI file to a drive separate from the database to increase throughput
PCS inspects and tunes the following database parameters:
• Variable extent
• Scatter factor
• Checkpoints
• Buffers flushed
• Free-disk space
• Plus much more
Additional tasks include:
• Detailed tuning of database and Appserver
• Review database logs for any crucial errors needing adjustments or repair
• Review version of Progress installed to determine if patch or upgrade is necessary
